Phase II of water supply and sanitation launched in Kumasi

By GNA

Kumasi, May 27, GNA - The second phase of the World Bank Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project (STWSSP) in the Ashanti region was launched in Kumasi on Thursday.

The 26 million-dollar project sponsored by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, is expected to be completed in July next year.

The project is being implemented in six regions -- Ashanti, Brong-ahafo, Upper West, Upper East, Western and Central. In the Ashanti region, seven districts selected to benefit from the project are Asante-Akim South, Ejisu-Juaben, Afigya-Sekyere, Ahafo-Ano North, Sekyere East, Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma and Adansi North. Mr Owusu Konadu, Engineer in-charge of the project, said each beneficiary community would contribute five per cent as a complementary fund while the respective district assemblies also provide another five per cent.

He said under the current phase, pipe systems and toilets would be constructed in homes and schools, unlike the first phase, which only provided boreholes and latrines.

Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister who launched the project, thanked the IDA for releasing funding for the project and said it would help improve the general health status of the people.
