Genevieve Basigha has been declared the overall winner of the MTN Heroes of Change season III held on Friday at the National Theater in Accra.

Speech and hearing impaired Genevieve received a plague, a citation and a cheque of GHC100, 000 for the grand prize.

Despite being deaf and dumb, Madam Basigha has set up a school in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region which caters for children who are deaf and dump.

Out of the over 1,700 entries that were received, 30 were shortlisted and then to the final 10, Madam Basigha competed against nine others and finally emerged victorious in the grand finale.

Ibrahim Bafara Alhassan, John Amankrah-Essel, Joseph Asakibeem, Dr Michael Adusei-Nsowah, Joana Mansah Deegbe, Nana Prof. Osei Kofi Darkwa III, Rev Fr. Dr. Moses Asaa Awinongya, Rev Monsignor Alex Bobby Benson and James Jack Dawson were the remaining finalists.

Each of the 10 finalists also took home GHC10, 000, a certificate of recognition and a plaque whiles Rev. Moses Asaah, Rev. Monsignor Alex Bobby Benson and Jack James Dawson who topped in the education, health, and economic empowerment categories respectively also took home GHS30,000 each.

The MTN Heroes of Change programme is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program of the MTN Ghana Foundation, designed to tell the stories of Ghana’s humanitarian heroes and heroines and to celebrate them for giving back to their communities in extraordinary and impactful ways.

The programme is organised by the MTN Ghana Foundation to reward people making a positive impact on society through philanthropy, and to encourage them to do more for society.

The Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Cynthia Lumor lauded Genevive’s virtue and praised her determination to assist children whose plights are similar to hers.

Genevieve’s victory in this year’s MTN Heroes of Change is good news for the dumb and deaf society which will ultimately reduce the stigma among persons with physical disability in the communities to aspire higher to do greater things towards the advancement of this nation.
