NGO urged government to harvest and store rain water for public use

Sunyani, March 23, GNA - Government has been urged to seek alternative approaches to preserve and sustain national water supply.

In his message to mark this year's World Water Day on the theme 'water and waste water', Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Media Foundation, said the national demand for limited water supply must spur the government to seek other alternatives.

International World Water Day was instituted by the United Nations and is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The Chief Executive Officer of the anti-corruption media advocacy non-governmental organisation recommended a national harvest, treatment and storage of rain water for future use.

Mr Ahenu observed that water was an essential commodity of life and there was the need for the government to support Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to harvest and store rain water for commercial purposes.

He observed that the country risked importing water for consumption if the water resources were not properly managed.

Mr Ahenu also underlined the need to recycle and manage waste water to become useful for other purposes.
