Accra, Feb. 16, GNA - The Federation of Environmental Journalists (FEJ), Ghana, on Wednesday called on the government and agencies involved in the fixing of petroleum prices to consider the negative impact the imposition of arbitrary prices on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) could cause to the environment.

A statement signed by Mr. Stephen E. Quarm, President of FEJ, said though the Federation was not against the general increase in petroleum prices, it was of the view that any increase in the prices of LPG would have a disastrous effect on the environment and defeat the objective of introducing LPG in the country.

According to the statement, the increase in the price of LPG would compel its users to resort to the use of charcoal and other fuel wood sources for domestic and commercial activities and lead to the destruction of forest resources.

"The environment and forests must not be sacrificed on the policy of deregulation."
