Hospital detains baby & mother for non-payment of bills

Nkawkaw, Sept. 9, GNA - The authorities of the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital, have detained a three-and-half months old baby boy, belonging to a disabled woman, who failed to honour a bill of 787,000 cedis, representing her delivery and feeding cost.

Yaa Sewaah, 22-year, who delivered through caesarian operation on June 21, this year, has been detained for two months now.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, at Nkawkaw on Thursday, Serwah's mother, Madam Akua Nyamekye and her uncle, Mr Kweku Mensah, said although they have settled the bill, the Hospital administration had slapped another bill of five million cedis, being the cost of feeding the baby and mother for a three-month period.

They complained that there was no way they could raise the extra amount and appealed to the Government and other public- spirited individuals and organizations to come to their aid. Madam Nyamekye said the authorities have also kept the baby away from them.
