UMaT lecturer in trouble for issuing dud cheque

Tarkwa, April 15, GNA - A 49 year-old lecturer at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa (UMaT), Peter Ekow Baffor, was on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of 20,000 Ghana cedis with two sureties to be justified by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for allegedly issuing a dud cheque.

He pleaded guilty and will re-appear on May 4.
Prosecuting, Police Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah, told the court presided over by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante that the complainant, Stephen Darkwa-Smith, is a businessman in Tarkwa.

He said in the year 2012, the accused went for financial assistance from the complainant and he promised to pay the money within a short period but failed to do so.

Chief Inspector Amponsah said the complainant made all the necessary efforts to get his money back, but that they did not yield any positive result.

The Prosecutor said, in December, last year, the accused person issued a Merchant Bank Ghana Limited cheque for 18,000 Ghana cedis to be cashed at the Tarkwa branch of the bank to defray the amount owed the complainant.

Chief Inspector Amponsah said when the complainant presented the cheque at the bank, it was dishonoured because the accused did not have enough funds in his account.

He said the complainant made a report to the police and when the accused person was arrested, he pleaded with the police to give him enough time to pay the money.

Chief Inspector Amponsah said for three months the accused person failed to fulfill his promise.
