Gov't will pursue rural dev't programme - Kufuor

Ekumfi-Narkwa (C/R), Aug 7, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Saturday said the government would pursue its rural development programme to improve the standard of living of the people.

The programmes are the rehabilitation of roads, provision of potable water, social amenities, educational and health facilities. President Kufuor announced this when addressing separate durbars of chiefs and people of Efumfi-Narkwa, Yamoransa and Apam on the last leg of his two-day official visit to the Central Region.

President Kufuor said the government would not let the people down in its efforts to develop the country.

He said the economic potentials in some of the communities had not been developed for the benefits of the people and these would be the priority agenda of the government.

President Kufuor commended the chiefs and people of Ekumfi-Narkwa for their clean beaches, however, he appealed to the people to ensure that they elect and enstool a new paramount chief in the area to bring, unity and development to the area.

Professor Kwasi Andam, Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, a citizen of the area and a spokesman for the people appealed to the government to rehabilitate roads in the area, provide potable water, better health and educational facilities.

He appealed to the government for assistance to establish a pineapple-processing factory and fishing harbour for the area to step up the fishing industry in the area.

Nana Okese Essandoh IV Paramount Chief of the Nkusukum Traditional Area appealed to the government to assist the people to halt the illiteracy, poverty and unemployment in the area.

He called on the government to establish a Police Station to curb the high incidence of crime and assist to reduce the perennial flooding at Yamoransa and rehabilitate roads in the area.
