NPPs Congress is a waste of money – Casely-Hayford
30.08.2014 LISTEN

Barely 24 hours to the New Patriotic Pary's (NPP) Super Delegates Congress, a financial analyst, Sydney Casely-Hayford has described it as a waste of money.

The delegates will prune the number of candidates vying to the lead the NPP in the 2016 presidential election from seven to five.

The seven candidates include Nana Akufo-Addo, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Francis Addai Nimo, Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and Joe Ghartey.

After Sunday's pruning exercise, delegates will in October, choose one out of the five to lead the party.

Speaking on the Big Issue Saturday on Citi Fm Mr. Casely-Hayford said the congress would only drain the party financially suggesting that only one congress should be held to select the flag bearer.

“This for me is a sign of things to come. It's not deep enough thought, it's a waste of money; money which they say they don't have anyway,” he said.

According to him, the process does not make sense for a party with financial challenges.

“For me, I see nothing wrong with the process about the number of persons who want to lead the party. I think this is not showing the true character of a party that wants to be thrifty and wants to be able to make things as simple as possible to go forward. I don't know what their constitution says and I don't know the reason why they put that in the constitution, but it doesn't make sense to me,” he added.

He suggested that the party could just select one person in Sunday's congress instead of multiple congresses.

“So why not you do it once. If you have seven people and you vote once you will see who is going to win. The person has to get only fifty plus one vote,” he implored.

Franklin Cudjoe, the Executive Director of IMANI Ghana, on the programme advised the NPP to be focused and work to end the internal wrangling.

“If the NPP believes that they are a viable opposition, they should stop this joke and try to organise themselves properly,” he said.
