Following a court suit challenging the party's current National Council membership, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun a process of electing candidates from eight regions to its highest decision-making body.

A former NPP constituency chairman for Central Tongu, David Hoezame, had filed a suit at an Accra High Court challenging the current composition of the National Council.

On Saturday June 28, 2014, the Central and Ashanti regions elected their members who included key figures like former Interior Minister, Kwamena Bartels and controversial party figure Dr. Amoako Tufuor.

The remaining eight regions are electing their representatives Sunday.

However, the Northern Regional Executive Committee of the party has endorsed a list submitted to the national secretariat for approval as representation on the National Council.

The decision was an alternative of holding election to elect representation on the NPP National Council.

Under the constitution of the party, every five constituencies in the region had the opportunity to have one person to represent them on the National Council.

Also, the party's constitution stipulates that 50 per cent of the total regional representatives will come from the elected regional executives, while the remaining 50 per cent will be elected from the members of the party.

At a special meeting in Tamale, regional executives of the party from the 31 constituencies in the Northern Region unanimously endorsed a list of seven to represent the region on the National Council.

The list comprised four regional executive members including the regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu who is an automatic member, first vice Chairperson, Hajia Samata, second vice Chairperson, Alhaji Sunday and the regional Secretary, Sule Salifu.

The other three non- executive members are a former District Chief Executive for Bole, Salamatu Forgor, Alhaji Aminu Amadu, a founding member of the NPP in the Northern Region and Wiston Binabiba.

National Organiser of the party, John Boadu, confirmed to Joy News Sunday the decision of the Northern Regional Executive Committee of the party to opt for endorsement of the seven shortlisted delegates was consistent with the party's constitution.
