Dambai police arrest armed robber

Hohoe, (V/R) April 8, GNA - The Dambai Police have arrested one of the four armed robbers who robbed traders and a Policeman of more than 200 million cedis cedis on the Dambai-Asukawkaw-Nkwanta road last Monday.

A driver of a pick-up truck who allegedly identified one of the robbers was shot dead at the scene of the robbery.

Shaifu Shagari, 28, believed to be a Fulani from Nigeria was arrested with the assistance of the people when he went to collect a black bag from the bush.

A total of 19.4 million cedis believed to be his share of the booty was found in the bag.

Briefing newsmen at Hohoe on Thursday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Edwin Bright Akorli said on April 5, this year the armed robbers wearing military camouflage uniforms and wielding AK 47 assault rifle blocked the road near Dambai with tree trunks and leaves and robbed traders to and from Dambai market of their monies and wares.

He said a Policeman who had gone to collect his salary was also robbed of his money.

Mr Akorli said Kingsley Agba, 32, driver of the pickup truck with registration number NR 1054 C was ordered to come down and was shot dead when he identified and called the name of one of the robbers.

His body had been deposited at the Hohoe Government Hospital for autopsy. Mr Akorli said Shagari hired a motor bike at Dambai the next day after the robbery to the scene of the robbery and collected the black bag from the bush and was nearly lynched by the youth of Dambai who identified him to be one of the robbers.

Shagari, who received injuries after being beaten by the youth of Dambai is helping the Police in their investigations.

Three other robbers are on the run.
