Ho, Aug 26, GNA - President John Dramani Mahama last Sunday lauded the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P) Church for accomplishing its founding mission of 'Bringing Light to where there is darkness' following its founding 166 years ago.

He said the establishment of several congregations,   schools and colleges, which have produced many prominent citizens, justified this mission.

So also are accomplishments in agriculture and environment and health.

President Mahama suggested that the Church immortalize its founders and personalities such as Togbe Kwadzo Dei Tutu II, of Peki, Reverends Lorenz Wolf, Paul Wiegrabe, R.S. Kwame and Mr W.M. Beveridge.

These were in his message read by Mr. Prosper Douglas Kwaku Bani, Chief of Staff, at the thanksgiving and ordination service at the end of the Church's fifth General Assembly.

Ten new pastors, three of them women including Rev Ruby Amable, formerly of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, were ordained.

The General Assembly was held under the theme, 'God of life, lead us to justice and peace and dignity for growth and development.'

President Mahama said many Ghanaians must cherish the theme considering its relevance to the prevailing circumstances the country was going through.

'Here in Ghana we are confronted with a number of challenges, including recent labour agitations, outrageous judgment debt payments, wanton depletion of our lands and forest cover through illegal mining and logging and creeping culture of lawlessness among others,' President Mahama said.

'I appeal to you to devote some time to seek God's divine intervention for this country,' he said.

The General Assembly honoured 23 personalities for distinguished service to the Church and nation.

They included Mr Doe Adjaho, Speaker of Parliament, Ms Dzifa Attivor, Minister of Transport, Dr Kofi Wampah, Governor, Bank of Ghana, Mr Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Appeal Court Judge and Reverend Dr Fred Degbe, former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana.
