Liberian jailed for possessing forged documents

Accra, Nov. 5, GNA- A 27-year-old Liberian who unlawfully had in his custody a Ghanaian passport and other documents was on Wednesday fined 2.6 million cedis by a circuit court in Accra.

He will go to jail for 10 months in default Nicholas Oscar Diggs pleaded guilty to conspiracy, possession of official document, forgery and deceit of public officer. Diggs will be deported to his country after paying the fine or serving his jail term.

The court ordered that the Ghanaian passport and the document found on him should be destroyed.

Police Inspector Benette Sarfo said on October 31, this year, a team of Policemen in their search for robbers who robbed Mr B.A Appenteng, Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group arrested Diggs and 30 others.

When Diggs was searched a Ghanaian passport bearing the name of Oscar Frank Kofi Thomas with Diggs's picture fixed on it.

A Liberian driver's licence, which bore the name of Nicolas Oscar Diggs with the convict's picture, was also found on him.

The police said upon interrogation Diggs admitted that he was a Liberian who visited Ghana recently and got into contact with one Samuel Owusu, now at large who secured him a Tax Clearance Certificate, Birth and Marriage Certificate, Certificate of registration of company in the name of Land Master Trading Enterprise and an indenture.

After securing the certificates, he decided to apply for a Ghanaian passport and he acquired it.
