NPP Stands Alone …as the World endorses Ghana Election results

The entrenched position taken by the opposition New Patriotic Party's National Executive Committee and its beleaguered flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the December 7, 2012 election to waste time on spilt milk by trying to fight the election results at the Supreme Court could be best likened to a grain of maize in the midst of fowls.

Whiles the NPP are tirelessly finding faults with the electoral results which they argued have been rigged to favor the incumbent President John Dramani Mahama, several well respected personalities, nations and observer missions from across the world and presidential candidates who contested the December 7 elections have doff off their hats to the Electoral Commission of Ghana for organizing a free, fair and transparent election; leaving the NPP as the only doubting Thomas.

Following last Friday's successful election which political pundits across the world said would continue to ring bells in countries that were battling to chart a permanent path of democracy and provide them with better development alternatives, Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo described the election as peaceful, transparent, free and fair, and should, therefore, be emulated by other African countries.

General Obasanjo who led an African Union (AU) and Economic Community for West African States delegation to observe the polls noted that “by this successful and peaceful election, Ghana has again added another beautiful block to the already political edifice it has built over the years.”

On the same pace President Yayi Boni of Benin who doubles as the Chairman of African union described Ghana as a model of African democracy, which would continue to encourage her neighbors to live in peace and unity to achieve lasting growth and development of the African continent.

The AU chairman congratulated President Mahama for winning the 2012 general election and Ghanaians, especially the opposition parties for their peaceful and successful participation in the just ended election.

“The Electoral Commission has declared John Mahama the winner of the 2012 presidential elections, and I congratulate him wholeheartedly on his victory. I also want to say how pleased I am that the elections were not marred by violence. I commend the Electoral Commission, political parties and the people of Ghana for their commitment to peaceful political expression," he noted.

Former president Jerry John Rawlings has also described this year's general elections as the best to be held in Ghana's electoral history and in Africa, and also commended Ghanaians who withstood the challenges that confronted the process forcing the EC to postpone the elections to a second day.

“I am just saying Mr. President [Yayi Boni] that this is the most serene electoral process I have ever witnessed in this country” the founder of the ruling NDC said.

On the international front, The United States of America has also in a statement congratulated President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for the successful election on December 7.

It said the December 7 poll which is the sixth successful presidential and parliamentary election since 1992, further demonstrates the people of Ghana's commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

“The United States encourages all parties to accept the results and to use the appropriate legal processes to resolve any electoral disputes,” the statement said.

For her part, the European Union congratulated the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, adding that “As a close and long standing partner, the EU looks forward to continuing its strong partnership with Ghana with the aim of promoting our common democratic values and supporting the country's continued social, economic and democratic development,” the statement said.

According to the EU, it welcomed the peaceful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections, which took place in an open, transparent and competitive environment.

Local umbrella observer group, CODEO, the NCCE and CHRAJ have all given their clean bill of health for the Ghana election 2012.

After Sunday's declaration by the Chairman of the EC, Dr Afari Gyan which declared incumbent President John Dramani Mahama as winner, presidential candidates of the PNC, PPP, UFP, CPP, GCPP and the only Independent Presidential candidates have all conceded; the NPP is the only party left to concede.

The NPP flag bearer addressing teaming supporters at the Obra Spot at 'Circle' in Accra on Tuesday December 11 stated emphatically that he will not accept the verdict of the Electoral Commission in the 2012 general elections.

Nana Akufo-Addo said the decision not to accept the EC's declaration was taken by the National Executive Council of the party at an emergency meeting held earlier in the day, adding that the party would not back down on its decision to go to court.
