Prospective voter arrested… for attempting to register twice

A 35 year old man has been busted by the Madina Divisional Police Command for allegedly attempting to register as a Voter twice in the ongoing biometric registration exercise. He is currently in Police custody.

The suspect, Kwabena Ofori, alias Samuel Ofori was arrested by the  Kwabenya Police Station and was later taken to the Madina Police Station where he was interrogated.

Briefing The Chronicle yesterday in Accra the Divisional Crime Officer of Madina, DSP Amos Yelisong said on April 12, 2012 at about 3:30pm the suspect went to Abladjie Electoral registration center to register where it was detected that he had already registered at a different registration center.

According to him the suspect went through the registration process to the final point when the biometric machine detected that he had already registered on March 30, 2012 and was issued with voter's identification card.

He said, he was therefore shown his earlier information and his picture on the machine and it was then that he admitted that he had registered earlier.

Suspect Kwabena Ofori was immediately arrested and handed over to the Kwabenya Police where he was later transferred to the Medina Divisional CID for interrogation.

According to the Police, investigations into the matter revealed that on March 30, 2012 the accused person went to Abladjie Registration Center with center number CO40201 and gave the following information's about himself. 'The suspect gave his name as Kwabena Ofori, age 35 years, his father's name as Kofi Amoako, mother's name as Akua Genfua, and his hometown as Asante Mampong.'

He noted that on April 12, 2012, at 3:30pm the suspect went to Parakou Estate Registration Center within the same Abladjie Electoral Area to register again.

The suspect, the Police said gave his information to the registration officer, as Samuel Ofori, his age 27 years, his father's name as Kofi Kwakye, his mother's name as Ama Serwah and his hometown as Jamase in the Sekyere South District in the Ashanti Region.

He said from all indications it was clear that the intention of the suspect was to register twice since he attempted to do so.

Kwabena Ofori, the police noted have been charged for attempting to commit crime and arraigned before court.

The suspect, The Chronicle learned, admitted committing the above mentioned offense upon interrogation.
