Africa Works Ghana Limited, has congratulated women, especially those in Africa, for their role in socio-economoc and political development, on the occasion of this year's International Women's Day.

These are contained in a statement signed by Mr. Joseph Quaye Amoo, Communications Manager of the company, which is an offshoot of the Africa Works Project, established in 2010 to share knowledge about investments, tourism, education and volunteering in Africa, copied to Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday. It said Chief Executive Officer of the company, Dr. Foster Ofosu, stated that: “On this day of International Women's Day, we recognize the strides we have made as Africans to promote gender equality and empower women, yet we acknowledge that there is more work to be done and that women have the right to develop themselves in pursuit of their social and economic aspirations.

He called on like-minded organizations and individuals, who share the vision of becoming leaders at the forefront of economic and social empowerment in Africa to be gender responsive, respect women's contribution and engage women more for better results through sustainable economic activities. The statement said the company's support for Events Management Africa Limited and its partnership with virtuous women of Kosmos Impact Ventures was testament of the company's commitment to supporting initiatives driven by women in Ghana.

Each year around the world, International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 and thousands of events occur not just on this day, but throughout the month to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities and women's groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.

"Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures" is the 2012 theme of the international women's day and this has been widely used by hundreds of organizations, including schools, universities, governments, women's groups and the private sector. Each year, the United Nations declares an overall International Women's Day theme and their 2012 theme is “Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty”.

Many organisations develop their own themes that are more relevant to their local contexts as for example, the European Parliament's 2012 theme is "Equal pay for work of equal value".
