Sixty-eight industries have been honoured at a ceremony in Accra for their role in accepting trainees from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Centre (TVET) on practical attachment.
The industries include the Cocoa Processing Company Limited, Ntiamoah Hotel, Tema Development Corporation, Construction Pioneers and Capital Catering Services.
Speaking at the ceremony the Deputy Minister for Manpower, Youth and Employment, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, said it is the policy of the government to ensure that the youth acquire employable skills through vocational training.
She said the ministry recognised the importance of skills development to empower the youth, especially females.
Mrs Osei-Opare said the award was to acknowledge and appreciate the assistance of the beneficiary industries and to encourage others to emulate them.
The Director of the Female Vocational Training School, Ms Comfort Ntiamoah-Mensah, appealed to the government to support industries in the country to enable them to attach students to their institutions for practical training.
Such support, she said, could be in the area of tax exemption.
The director further appealed to the government to take a critical look at the proposed Skills Development Fund designed to provide enough funds for the TVET sector as is the case in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Mauritius.
Ms Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State at the Ministry of Education, who was the guest of honour advised the public against looking down on trainees from TVET but to appreciate and support them to enable them to contribute their quota to national development.
