We're working to ensure stable electricity is restored quickly — Energy Minister

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured that work is ongoing to restore stable power supply to the country.

The country has experienced intermittent electricity disruptions over the past two weeks, raising concerns among households and businesses.

The outages were initially linked to ongoing transformer upgrade works by the Electricity Company of Ghana.

However, the situation worsened after a fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company’s power control centre at Akosombo, leading to a loss of about 1,000 megawatts from the national grid.

In a social media post on Tuesday, April 28, following his visit to the site the previous day, the Minister said engineers are working around the clock to restore supply.

“Last night, I visited the Akosombo Substation again to personally assess the ongoing restoration works following the recent fire incident that affected the control room and led to the loss of over 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid,” he said.

He added, “To the general public, I assure you that we are doing everything within our power to ensure that stable electricity supply is restored as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, the Minister announced the restoration of two generation units that went down after the fire outbreak.

According to him, the restored units have added about 280 megawatts back to the grid, offering some relief to the strained power supply.

He noted that efforts are ongoing to fully stabilise the system as engineers continue repair works at the affected facility.
