Two people, a University of Cape Coast (UCC) lecturer and his Teaching Assistant (TA), have died and five others sustained injuries following a road accident at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra to Cape Coast Highway.
The incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m., prompting a swift response from personnel of the Central Regional office of the Ghana National Fire Service in Cape Coast.
All casualties were transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment.
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOI Abdul Wasui Hudu, said the crash involved a Toyota Corolla with registration number GW 5769 16 and a HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN 1497 22.
He explained that the driver of the Toyota Corolla, UCC lecturer, was trapped behind the steering wheel and had to be rescued by fire officers. The driver was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
An eyewitness account indicated that the Toyota Corolla was travelling from Cape Coast toward Accra when the driver encountered a pickup vehicle dangerously overtaking and attempting to merge into the lane of the oncoming tipper truck.
The Corolla driver, driven by the UCC lecturer, reportedly slowed down in response to the situation.
DOI Hudu said the tipper truck, which was moving in the opposite direction, veered off its lane to avoid a collision with the overtaking pickup vehicle. However, while attempting to return to its lane, the driver lost control and crashed into the Corolla, killing the UCC lecturer and his TA.
The Central Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFO Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah, who was at the scene, urged drivers to exercise caution and remain patient while using the road to prevent similar incidents.
