Court premises declared crime scene as Judicial Service relocates Sunyani Circuit and Magistrate Courts

The Judicial Service has temporarily relocated Circuit Court ‘A’ and District Magistrate Court ‘B’ in Sunyani to the Sunyani High Court premises following a fire outbreak that destroyed their building.

A visit to the scene near the Sunyani Municipal Assembly showed officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service examining the charred remains of the structure, which has been cordoned off and declared a crime scene.

Judicial Service staff were also present to direct litigants, lawyers, and other court users to the High Court premises to continue court proceedings.

Although CID officers declined to comment, it was gathered that the fire, which occurred in the early hours of April 26, 2026, destroyed documents, office equipment, and other essential materials kept in the building.

The Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One Kwame Adomako, confirmed that investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire. He said the exact cause remains unknown, but possible factors under consideration include negligence, accident, or arson, and urged the public to remain calm as inquiries continue.

Meanwhile, the Sunyani Traditional Council has visited the site and pledged support toward the reconstruction of the damaged facility.

The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boaken Korkor II, who led the delegation, said the council would also fund the installation of CCTV cameras to improve security at the premises after renovation.

He called on the public, especially businesses and corporate institutions, to support the rebuilding effort, stressing that restoring the court facility is a shared responsibility. He also urged the police to expedite investigations into the cause of the fire.

The chief expressed sympathy to the Judicial Service and court users, assuring them of the council’s commitment to ensuring a quick restoration of the facility, noting that an effective justice system is essential for national development.

The delegation included several sub-chiefs and officials of the Sunyani Customary Land Secretariat, and was received at the scene by the Supervising High Court Judge for the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions, Justice Joyce Boahen, along with other Judicial Service directors.
