Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a leading communicator of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has slammed the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo over the country's declining cocoa production.

Kwakye Ofosu noted that when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government first took office in 2017, annual cocoa production stood at 969,000 metric tonnes.

However, he says production has plummeted to around 500,000 metric tonnes last season.

Projections, according to the NDC member, also indicate there will be a further fall to 492,000 tonnes for the current 2023-2024 crop year.

In a social media post on Tuesday, March 11, Kwakye Ofosu indicated that the fall in production is a sign of "hopeless governance" by Akufo-Addo and his vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Bawumia and Akufo/Addo inherited annual cocoa production of 969,000MT in the 2016/2017 crop season. This reduced to 500,000 MT in the 2022/2023 crop season. In the 2023/2024 crop season cocoa production will drop further to 492,000 MT," he stated.

Meanwhile, Ghana is the second-largest exporter of cocoa beans in the world, after Ivory Coast.
