The Project Coordinator for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA SWP), Ing. George Asiedu has implored all political parties in the country to give attention to sanitation and water in their manifestoes ahead of the 2024 general election.

According to him, any manifesto that does not prioritise sanitation and water is not a good manifesto.

He made the emphatic statement on Monday, March 12, while speaking at the commissioning of the Centre for Training of Artisans in the Construction and Installation of Biodigester Household Toilet at the Ada College of Education

“Manifestos that does not prioritise sanitation and water is not a good manifesto so I would like to urge our political parties to make sure they factor water and sanitation in their manifestos,” Ing. George Asiedu said.

Having led the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project, Ing. George Asiedu with the help of the Ministry of Sanitation has played a key role in the improvement of sanitation in the country.

In his address at the commissioning, he disclosed that the hard work of the Sanitation Ministry has seen Ghana’s sanitation coverage increase to around 25.3%. This is a jump from the 15% recorded in 2015.

Ing. George Asiedu believes that despite the gains, the country needs to make additional investments in sanitation and water.

“We have gotten this far because government prioritized sanitation and a Ministry was established to focus on water and sanitation. We still have a long way to go and we need to do more,” the GAMA Coordinator stressed.

The newly-commissioned Centre for Training of Artisans in the Construction and Installation of Biodigester Household Toilets at the Ada College of Education is to train artisans on how to properly install Biodigester Household Toilets.

The Sanitation Ministry is confident that this will not only contribute to creating jobs for the youth but will help in improving the country’s sanitation situation.
