Vetoing Un Security Council Ceasefire Resolution On Palestine Is Unacceptable
01.03.2024 LISTEN

The Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Foundation (STBHF) adds its voice to the humanitarian calls around the world to condemn US veto at the United Nations of a ceasefire resolution submitted recently by the African State of Algeria. This is the third time that the Biden administration in Washington has vetoed for the continuation of the heinous crime and holocaust-like campaign against the Palestinian people.

Much as the STBHF is concerned, the action of the US is at variance with international public opinion as well as US values. The United Nations Security Council constitutes 15 members, and five of them are permanent members, including the US, Britain, Russia, France and China. It is clear today that, the US is practically alone in the world and in the Security Council. Thirteen Council members voted for the Algerian drafted ceasefire resolution, while the US closest ally on the Council, the United Kingdom, abstained. At the General Assembly, UN members overwhelmingly voted for a ceasefire that could lead to ending the violence on Palestine.

Again, we subscribe to the conclusion that the US anti-Palestinian veto amounts to nothing but it’s a slap on the face of all good and peace-loving people. This latest US action is further proof that the Biden administration is not only supporting the genocide campaign against the Palestinian people, but an ally allowing it to continue against international opinion.

The Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Foundation expresses its serious concerns with regard to the Biden administration’s unstopped support to Israel and its atrocious campaign and genocidal war against innocent Palestinian people. This unconditional support is truly appalling and encouraging Israel to advance its war crimes and human rights violations with no fear of accountability, given that the U.S. continues to provide diplomatic and military support to the Israeli government.

It is clear that the US can violate the principles of the United Nations Charter with impunity, and the Biden administration sees no value in Palestinians' lives. The unending brutal occupation and level of destruction in Palestinian occupied lands and territory at least are worrisome and have shocked us in Africa and the entire world.

What is happening in Gaza today is a campaign of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. We warn that the civilised world is growing impatience and the silence on the continued Israeli heinous crime and genocide campaign in Palestine is a threat to world peace, stability and security, and this presents a risk to the entire world. The US anti-Palestinian action will only contribute to anti-American sentiment in the Middle-east and across the global village.

With the above, we urge the Biden administration to rescind its anti-Palestinian Arab policy, for the sake of peace and stability. There will be no winners in this ongoing violence and genocide campaign. The Biden administration should lend its ears to the United Nations and other credible international instruments. The Biden administration should not see the war crime and genocide campaign against the Palestinian people as avenue to score political goal at home.

Through this statement, we salute all the countries that stood with the Palestinians, who voted for a ceasefire whether at the United Nations Security Council or at the General Assembly. We salute also all those individuals and instruments that made their voices heard in the humanitarian calls for ceasefire in Gaza and other territories of Palestine.
