The deposed National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson has reiterated his confidence in winning the upcoming by-election in the constituency.

Speaking to the media after a court hearing on Wednesday, June 21, Mr. Quayson expressed optimism despite the ongoing legal battle over which he has been accused of perjury and forgery.

"I am going to be victorious,” he said in relation to the upcoming by-election on Tuesday, June 27.

The court hearing was an appeal made by lawyers for Mr. Quayson against the daily trial of criminal charges against him.

The Accra High Court had previously ordered the trial to be done on a day-to-day basis starting from June 20.

However, the court reversed this decision after Mr. Quayson's lawyers argued that the Attorney General, Godfred Dame, had made prejudicial comments and had not shown respect to legal etiquette.

Lead counsel for Mr. Quayson, Tsatsu Tsikata, cited Article 55(13) of the constitution and the Supreme Court's provisions, which allow accused persons to take part in national assignments such as the by-election.

However, Mr. Dame objected, stating that the accused person's primary duty was to clear his name in the criminal charges brought against him.

Despite the legal battle, Mr. Quayson remains focused on the upcoming by-election.

He has been campaigning vigorously, highlighting his achievements during his tenure and promising to do more for the constituency if given the chance again.

The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, is expected to be closely contested with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ND vying for the seat.
