Ghana has been commended for its role in the promotion of peace, stability and good governance, since its independence 50 years ago.

The Chairman of the Ghana Netherlands Chamber of Commerce and Culture (GHANCEE), Mr Peter Gralla, who made the commendation, said these were vital pre-conditions and essential elements needed to sustain commercial and economic growth of any country.

At a dinner of the chamber in Accra, Mr Gralla said Ghana was also being congratulated for the laudable achievement in recent times in the area of the rule of law, and respect for civil liberties and human rights.

'As is typical in life's journey, achievements are invariably accompanied by challenges', he added, saying that Ghana at 50 faced its fair share of the challenges, on top them being the energy crisis.

He said GHANECC was focused on providing help and assistance to individuals and businesses which showed a genuine interest in carrying on the relationship between Ghana and the Netherlands.

Earlier, the Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Lidy Remmelzwall, said Ghana had a healthy business climate which was crucial for a strong private sector participation.

She added that Ghana was on the right track as was listed in the 'Doing Business Report 2007', as one of the top reformers in Africa.

The Netherlands Ambassador commended the chamber for the dinner, which, she noted, was to bring together the people of Ghana and Netherlands, for further co-operation.

The Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, said the Dutch were one of the longest partners of Ghana.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey also commended the Dutch Government for providing funds to the Government of Ghana for the renamed Ussher Fort currently under renovation on the High Street in Accra.
