Looming Bye Election in Domeabra-Obom Constituency
29.03.2023 LISTEN

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) would soon lose a seat temporarily due to the possible conduct of a by-election in the Domeabra-Obom Constituency.

This would be possible from information gathered that the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Sophia Ackuaku has abandoned her seat in Domeabra-Obom for the Ayawaso Central seat.

Information gathered Sophia Ackuaku hasn’t filed her nomination to contest the Domeabra-Obom constituency seat after the deadline passed. It wasn’t surprising when our team discovered her posters all over the Ayawaso Central constituency

Meanwhile, this paper has gathered that, Sophia Ackuaku is receiving support from some of the constituency executive.

It would be recall that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has put on hold parliamentary primaries in some 23 constituencies including Ayawaso Central, Amasaman, Afram Plains South, Akwatia, Effutu, Gomoa Central, Amenfi East, Evalue Gwira, Assin North, Pusiga, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Ayensuano, Adansi Asokwa, Offinso North, Ahafo Ano North, Sekyere Afram Plains, Ahafo Ano South West (Aduagyaman) Bosome Freho, Asante Akim Central, Manso Adubia, Manhyia South, Subin, Fomena.

It is hoped that when the party opens nominations for these constituencies, Sophia Ackuaku will file her nomination to contest the Parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso constituency.

For her move to go through, she must resign her current position as MP for Domeabra-Obom constituency for Parliament to declare her seat vacant.

In that event, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would announce for By-election in Domeabra-Obom constituency to elect a new candidate for the coming elections.

Per the Party Code of Conduct and Guidelines for electing Parliamentary Candidates, Sophia Ackuaku who has mooted the desire to contest another seat in parliament cannot occupy her current position in the House and hence must resign.

Some party supporters see her move as an excellent one, others are vehemently against it because this would be the third constituency she has contested.

Dome Kwabenya been her first in 2012.
Our team will follow the story to its conclusion.
