Censure Motion Palaver And Pablo’s Victory!

MY MICROSCOPIC pen today focuses on activities of opposition Zu-za. My focus is mainly on two events in the Umbrella fraternity that happened last week.

It so happened that the Minority in Parliament failed woefully in its bid to ensure the removal of the Finance Minister, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta, from office through its censure motion. A friend from the Zu-za stock called the Minority’s action ‘eccentric and delusional’ as he wondered why the Minority believed that they could convince the Majority to support their censure motion. He further argued that the Minority should have allowed the 80 Majority Members of Parliament (MPs) to finish the agitation to remove the Finance Minister instead of hijacking the process.

I believe my friend got it all wrong. The Minority’s action is neither eccentric nor delusional. They knew too well that the censure motion was bound to fail. But they still went ahead with it because of two reasons: They wanted to share in the glory should the 80 Majority MPs succeed in removing the finance minister; or prove to the electorate that they did all they could to remove Hon. Ken but it was the Majority side that stabbed the electorate in the back. In other words, they will inundate our ears with the tale that although they did their best, it was the Majority side that ensured that their efforts did not yield the desired result. Either way, Zu-za will look good in the eyes of the populace.

So, you see, it’s not a matter of getting the censure motion approved or not. Rather, it's a matter of how you seize an opportunity to gain political advantage. Zu-za simply decided to make hay while the sun was shining so they could use it to roof their mud house. They may not be sincere in their action, but it’s a master stroke all the same.

Yes, some of us can read in between the lines and expose the Minority’s insincerity and opportunistic action in the censure motion palaver. But how many of our gullible compatriots can do same? Hon. Haruna and his ilk know this fact, that’s why they do not hesitate to engage in such populist gimmicks. Certainly, time will prove if they were right or wrong.

Well, Zu-za’s youth and women’s wing had their congress last Saturday and the results are as intriguing as they are insightful. The incumbent Youth Organiser, Opare Addo, won convincingly against the establishment candidate, Brogya Gemfi. Pablo, as he is affectionately called, resisted the political machinations of the Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, to retain his seat.

Sammy Gyamfi and his cohorts heavily campaigned against Pablo and branded him anti-Mr. Dead-Goat. They went out guns blazing against him but Pablo still triumphed. My Zu-za friend said Don Pablo displayed “courage, grit and determination” amidst a vast conspiratorial plot. I cannot help but agree. Indeed, Pablo is a tough seed!

I tend to support the notion that Pablo’s victory is a resounding rebuke of the so-called invincibility of Mr. Dead-Goat in the party. I also agree that the greatest loser is Sammy Gyamfi as the Zu-za youth wing has demonstrated to him that he is not as important in the party as he thinks.

I’m told Hannah Bissiw too endured the same ordeal. She was also tagged anti-Mr. Dead-Goat but eventually beat Magoo, the perceived choice of the Dead-Goat camp.

I’m not a fan of Hannah Bissiw. Indeed, I detest her style of politics because I abhor insults and show of gross disrespect to others. I was raised to eschew those negative traits. But I’m happy she won because it sends a strong signal to the Dead-Goat camp that the chair on which they sit has wobbly legs.

Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is also being given the anti-Mr. Dead-Goat tag. They say he has the tacit support of Dr. Kwabena Duffuor. Those who vehemently opposed Pablo’s candidature are the same people opposing Chairman Ampofo in the chairmanship race against General Ntontom.

My friend, who belongs to the Duffuor camp, says they are capable of causing an upset in the presidential race against Mr. Dead-Goat. I read his Facebook post before writing this piece and he said he still had a big smile on his face following Pablo’s victory. Hmm, Torgbui Titriku II di asem beba oo!
