Former Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney, has passed away. The veteran politician died on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at a hospital in Palm Beach, Florida. He was 84. The cause of death of Brian Mulroney is complications from a fall he sustained at home.
"On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family," daughter of the late politician, Caroline Mulroney, announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Who was Brian Mulroney?
Brian Mulroney was born on March 20, 1939, in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. He was an astute politician, lawyer, and businessman who served as the 18th Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993.
He studied political science and law before becoming a prominent labour lawyer in Montreal. His career trajectory shifted towards politics when he entered the race for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party (PCP) in 1976, although he initially fell short.
Undeterred, Mulroney continued his political involvement and successfully became leader of the PCP in 1983. In 984, he led the party to victory in the general election, ushering in an era of Conservative dominance in Canadian politics.
During his nearly nine years in office, Mulroney's legacy remains mixed. He championed free trade agreements with the United States and Mexico. This resulted in increased economic integration. He also played a role in ending apartheid in South Africa. However, his tenure was also marked by economic challenges and the highly controversial Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords, which aimed to address the concerns of Quebec but ultimately failed to gain widespread support.
After stepping down in 1993, Mulroney remained a public figure and pursued various business ventures.
He is survived by his wife, Mila Pivnicki, and four children including Ben and Caroline, who is also a politician.

Caroline, in the X post, did not indicate how his father passed away. However, her spokesperson, according to a New York Times report, revealed that the late former PM fell to the ground and was hospitalized. Unfortunately, Mulroney could not survive as he died due to complications from the fall.
