Gerald Asamoah's contract with Schalke 04 expires in the summer. S04 has now made a decision on the future of the club icon.

Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 and club icon Gerald Asamoah will go their separate ways after the current season. Asamoah's current position of "Head of Licensing" will be eliminated without replacement due to the restructuring at the club. The expiring contract will therefore not be extended.

"As part of the continuous, sustainable restructuring of the sport club, we as club managers have decided that the role of Head of Licensing will no longer exist at Schalke for the new season. Accordingly, the cooperation with Gerald will end," S04 CEO Matthias Tillmann quoted as saying in a club press release.

The 40-year-old went on to explain that Asamoah wants to take the next step in his career. Even though the former national team player (Gerald Asamosh) has completed a management course with the DFB and the DFL. Tillmann emphasized that S04 would not be able to offer him any such prospects.

I am extremely grateful for that. I learned to love the club, the fans and the whole environment and always tried to make all Schalke fans proud. It is all a more painful for me that this chapter is coming to an end for the time being," said Asamoah.

Asamoah says an emotional goodbye to Schalke 04:

He continued: "Unfortunately, in the current situation, there is no other option. But one thing is also clear: I will remain connected to the club forever. For me, it's more than just lip service: once a Schalke player, always a Schalke player."

Tillmann emphasised Asamoah's services to the club. As a player, Asamoah was a "Schalke legend" and part of many successful moments. According to Tillmann, his sporting achievements are complemented by his commitment to socio-political issues, above all the fight against racism and xenophobia.

"Gerald Asamoah, a co-founder and a significantly shaped central initiative of the Schalke 04 club is always welcome at "Berger Feld" and will always have a home here. We wish him all the best in his personal and professional life," said Schalke's CEO.
