Two districts honour 77 teachers and educational workers

By GNA

Kyebi (E/R), Feb. 25, GNA- Seventy-seven teachers in the East Akyem District and the newly created Atiwa District, both in the Eastern Region, have been honoured for their meritorious services rendered during the periods 2002 to 2005.

The recipients, including some non-teaching staff received refrigerators, gas stoves and other token items for their contribution in elevating the standards of education in the twin districts in the midst of odds, especially for 30 teachers who accepted postings to deprived schools in the area.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ewurabena Ahwoi, advised the award winners to avoid relapsing but strive to show their uniqueness by initiating a vibrant award winners association as a platform to influence educational policies.

Mrs. Ahwoi charged them to break their silence by forming associations that would expose them and also enable them to use their expertise in diverse ways that would help quicken Ghana's stride towards becoming a middle-income level country. Mrs. Ahwoi appealed to teachers to facilitate conditions for learning as well as seeing themselves as professionals making commitment to professional behaviours.

The East Akyem District Chief Executive, Mr. Victor Emmanuel Asihene, appealed to the Ghana Education Service to decide on the prescribed uniform for public schools. He commended the teachers on their achievements and role as prime agents of change and the nerve centre of Ghana's development drive, adding that they would remain a core part of any Government policy.

Mr. Asihene also spoke on the role of parents in shaping the character of their wards to be useful citizens and asked them not to relent in this regard.

The District Director of Education, Mrs. Ernestina Afosah-Anim, said since teachers remain a pivotal part of Government's development agenda, they ought to be appropriately recognized and motivated to do their job.
