Accra, Feb. 20, GNA - The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Monday increased transport fares by 5 per cent across board in line with the recent fuel increase by 9.59 per cent and 10.54 per cent for petrol and diesel respectively.

A statement Mr Stephen Okudzeto, General Secretary of GPRTU signed said the decision was arrived at the emergency meeting of the National Working Committee of the Union and appealed to their members to bear with the union and adhere to the 5 per cent increase "for the moment." It said the regional secretariats of the union should negotiate the fares for Taxis and Trotro operators in the various districts and Metropolitan Assembly areas.

The statement said, "Meanwhile our Union is conducting its own market survey on other operational costs in the transport industry and would soon come out with realistic fares to keep us in business and favourable to commuters as well." It also urged the public to co-operate with the drivers and to report any misunderstanding which might arise in the computerisation of the fares for redress.
