Navrongo (U/R), Nov 23, GNA - The Kassena-Nankana District Assembly is to spend 80.8 million Cedis from its share of the Common Fund on the rehabilitation and maintenance of schools affected by rainstorms this year.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Emmanuel Chegeweh, announced this when he conducted a team of newsmen to visit some of the affected schools on Tuesday. They were Nayagenia Primary, Kumbosgo Primary, and Saka Primary Schools.
Most of the affected schools had their roofs ripped off and the buildings cracked as a result of the rainstorm. The situation had an adverse effect on teaching and learning in the schools. The DCE explained that out of the 80.8-mllion cedis, 46 million cedis would be spent on Nayagenia Primary, 18 million cedis on Kumbosgo Primary, and 16.8 million cedis spent on Saka Primary School. At the Nayagenia Primary School, the Assembly had already started moulding blocks for rehabilitation works on the three damaged classroom blocks.
Mr. Chegeweh indicated that the government attached much importance to education as the key element for the nation's development, adding that it was the reason for Government's continuous commitment of more resources to the education sector.
He stressed that with the introduction of the Capitation Grants, it was an offence under the law for parents to refuse to send their children to school, and warned that plans were underway to get such parents penalised.
The DCE emphasised that the best legacy parents could leave for their children was education, saying, "whether you would be taken proper care of in future when you grow old depends on how serious you take your children's education. The best investment is education", he declared. In a related development, the Kassena-Nankana district office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on Tuesday donated three packets of roofing sheets to the Nayagenia Primary School for its rehabilitation.
The Headteacher of the School, Mr Peter Nchor, thanked the Assembly and NADMO for their kind gesture.
