Ghana Institution Of Engineers Receives Solar Plant

General News Ghana Institution Of Engineers Receives Solar Plant
DEC 8, 2018 LISTEN

The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) have benefitted from a solar power panel donated by Process and Plant Automation Limited and its Chinese partner, Chint.

This is in line with efforts aimed at promoting a greener environment.

The 10KWh grid-tied solar photovoltaic panels is expected to generate a minimum of 40KWh of energy a day, saving the centre at least 40 units of electricity use a day.

The move, according to Regional Manager for Chint West Asia and Africa, Gary Gan is as part of its TURN ON THE LOVE programe.

He said Ghana’s location within the tropics enables it to receive high levels of direct solar radiation daily all year round, constituting a large untapped energy potential.

Regional Manager for Chint West Asia and Africa noted that, the sun energy in Ghana could be exploited to produce electricity to ameliorate persistent energy crises facing the nation.

Gary Gan added that, they will be doing more of such donations as part of their contribution to help Ghana have an environmentally friendly technology in energy generation mix.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Process and Plant, Ing. Kweku Asmah said the gesture is to enable the Institution of Engineering cut down cost of electricity.

“The Solar PV system will generate 15 kilowatts an hour of electricity a year and I trust that it will offer the Engineering Centre some relief in its monthly cost of electricity” he stated.

Mr. Asmah stressed that going solar is very affordable and it is one of the most cost-effective sources of energy.

Also, the Executive Director of the GhIE, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was elated at the donation describing it as timely.

He noted that, going solar will save the institution 60 percent of its yearly electricity cost.

“Our strategy is to eventually move completely off-grid and have solar as our primary source of energy, with power from the national grid as a plan B” Mr. Agyapong opined.

He expressed their profound gratitude to Process and Plant and Chint and urged government to promote an industry-wide shift of investment and production in PV solar projects.

Meanwhile, Process and Plantand Chint have won a bid to engineer, design, supply and install a 2MW solar PV in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi next year.
