Demo: COPEC, Drivers to Pressurize Govt to Reduce Fuel Price

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Concerned Drivers Association and the True Drivers Union of Ghana have threaten to demonstrate if Government fails to reduce fuel prices by the 12th of December this year.

The Unions have expressed concern over the incessant increase in fuel prices although the price of the commodity on the world market continues to reduce.

Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of the Concerned Drivers, William Osei, warned they would demonstrate across the country on December 19, 2018, if the government fails to grant their request.

“Fuel prices are always being increased and they won't allow us to increase our fares. This is so unfair. We are giving the government up to December 12, 2018, to reduce the fuel prices else we will hit the streets with series of demonstrations,” he added.

Fuel prices have been unstable in the last few months.

In October 2018, prices of both petrol and diesel went were sold for more than GHc5 a gallon with many calling on government scrap some of the fuel taxes so prices could go down.

Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak , in November 2018 rode a bicycle to Parliament in protest of the high cost of fuel and what he called harsh economic conditions under the Akufo-Addo administration.

COPEC and the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) embarked on a demonstration earlier in 2018 in protest of what they described as the persistent hikes in the prices of petroleum products.
