Gov’t Earmarks $235M For Construction Of 10 Fishing Harbours

Government has earmarked a total amount of $235 Million to be used for the construction of 10 fishing harbours and landing sites at vantage points in fishing communities, Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed.

According to the Information Minister Cabinet has already approved the commercial and financial agreement for the projects per the plans of Government. Its execution is however dependent of Parliamentary approval which is currently pending.

Speaking at a bi-weekly press briefing in Accra earlier today, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah revealed that government’s decision to construct these harbours is a way of fulfilling’s the New Patriotic Party’s promise of transforming the fishing industry.

“The government’s vision to transform Ghana’s fishing industry is clearly stated in the NPP’s 2016 manifesto, under Agriculture and Rural Development on pages 18 and 19. It includes a key pillar that says: ‘Top of the agenda for fisheries will be the programme of building landing sites and storage facilities’”, he cited.

The following areas have been chosen for the construction of the fishing harbours:

Teshie – Greater Accra Region
Axim – Western Region
Dixcove – Western Region
Elmina – Central Region
Winneba – Central Region
Mumford – Central Region
Senya-Bereku – Central Region
Fetteh-Gomah – Central Region
Moree – Central Region
Keta – Volta Region
