Mahama’s Only Unfinished Business Is Looting

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, Alexander Abban, believes that former President John Dramani Mahama's decision to contest the presidential primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and subsequently vie for the presidency, is borne out of a desire to siphon more state resources.

He made the comment in response to Member of Parliament for Odododio Constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye's suggestion that the former President is contesting to ostensibly complete some infrastructural projects he started while in power.

“I think John Mahama has reflected a lot. This country has benefited him and done a lot for him, and since he did not complete the agenda he set himself for Ghana, this is an opportunity,” Nii Lante Nadepuye had said.

But the NPP MP in a sharp rebuttal said Mr. Mahama's decision might have been influenced by greed.

Mr. Abban further pointed out that former President has no moral right to contest for the highest office again, given the scandals recorded under his administration.

“If there is any unfinished business that he is coming to do then probably it is the loot. We had corruption out of proportion levels. John Mahama comfortably presided over that and could not stamp his feet. The general perception was that he was deeply involved and Ghanaians extricated themselves from that burden. Apart from greed, what other reason does John Mahama have to want to return to the contest for?” Mr. Abban asked.

John Mahama formally declared his intention to contest the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) presidential primaries after his letter of intent was presented to the party on his behalf by a delegation led by former Ambassador, Daniel Ohene Agyekum at the NDC headquarters Thursday August 23, 2018 in Accra.

Others members of the delegation included former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Valerie Sawyer, Ambassador Victor Smith, Inusah Fuseini and a host of Members of Parliament.

Mr. Mahama joins other high profile candidates within the NDC including the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, and Nadowli Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin.

Other candidates are Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah; a former Trade and Industry Minister; Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, and Cape Coast South MP Kweku Ricketts-Hagan.

The NDC elects its presidential candidate in a yet-to-be announced date in December 2018.
