Who Watches The Watchman Video Grips Hundreds

Outspoken Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, on Wednesday, June 27 “exposed” ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, in his video titled, “Who Watches the Watchman.”

The video, which was aired at the forecourt of Kencity Media, which operates Net 2 Television and Oman FM at Madina in Accra, attracted hundreds of people.

Scores of people thronged the premises of Kencity Media to watch the video despite a football match between powerhouse Brazil and Switzerland at the World Cup in Russia.

Personalities such as renowned movie actor, Kofi Adu, popularly known as “Agya Koo”, were there to watch the video.

In the video, a young man alleged to be Anas Aremeyaw Anas was contracted by one Mubarak to track down a suspect named Hafiz for engaging in a fraud case involving $1.9 million.

He was heard using the name of former president John Evans Atta Mills to intimidate Mubarak.

'Anas' then goes to meet the suspect Hafiz and demands $53,000 to 'kill' the case.

In another scene, 'Anas' was seen chatting with a prosecutor in her office where he confessed that he was bribed with an amount of $100,000 because he somewhat relates the suspect.

He paid the prosecutor $5,000 to tamper with evidence in order to derail the case in court.

In same video, 'Anas' again confessed to the prosecutor that he paid $75,000 to the then Director-General of Police, DCOP Adu Poku.

The MP, who is the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin Central in the Central Region, has been involved in a public spat with Anas and his Tiger Eye PI since former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwasi Nyantakyi was arrested by the police following Anas' blockbuster expose on corruption in Ghana football hit the public domain.

Modus Operandi
The MP, who clearly does not appear to be a fan of Anas, questioned the modus operandi of the journalist whose name evokes fear in people, especially the political elite and the powerful in the society.

Mr. Agyapong, after the arrest of Mr. Nyantakyi, threatened to 'expose' Anas because he claimed the journalist has cobwebs in his closet and he is not what he is being portrayed in the eyes of the public.

According to the MP, who is noted for speaking his mind, the modus operandi of Anas in soliciting information for public consumption contravenes the law, but said the popular journalist is being spurred on by a section of the public to destroy people's reputations by trapping them with 'juicy' offers.

At the end of the video, many people, especially the youth 'hailed' Kennedy Agyapong for coming out with tape about Anas and chanted his name.

Speaking to the press, the vociferous MP said, “I am fighting for every Ghanaian in this country. I am fighting for all. One person cannot take this country to ransom. We should not allow Anas to destroy families. We should not allow Anas to kill our progress.”

He accused Anas of taking money from some people to deliberately exclude them from his investigations.

According to the MP, Anas took money from some custom officers and judges to exclude them from his investigative piece.

There has been mixed reactions since the MP premiered 'Who Watches the Watchman'.

While some claimed the MP's video exposed the corrupt practices of the dreaded investigative journalist, others said that the MP had nothing to prove.

Those in support of Anas and his Tiger Eye PI team are saying that the MP's attempt to incite a section of the public against Anas is a disincentive in the fight against corruption.

Already, Anas has filed defamation suit against the MP at an Accra High Court after the MP accused him of being 'blackmailer' and 'extortionist.'

He has accused Anas of being sponsored by some members of the public to destroy people's reputations by trapping them with 'juicy' offers and called for an injunction to be placed on Anas' video on corruption in Ghanaian football dubbed, 'Number 12.'

The video was aired across the country which attracted thousands of people.
