The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Fanteakwa District in the Eastern Region has commenced its sensitization programmes on corruption for the second quarter of the year 2018.

The month-long sensitization programme is focused on the role of groups in the fight against corruption as well as the promotion of accountability and compliance to the Rule of Law in the public sector.

Civic educators from the NCCE were expected to visit various institutions including schools, religious organizations, hospitals and other institutions to talk on the theme: 'Corruption and Anti-Corruption message'.

Miss Cynthia Essel, Fanteakwa District NCCE Director, told the Ghana News Agency that the educational programmes formed part of the Corruption Action Plan 2015-2024 (NACAP).

Miss Essel noted that NACAP which was been implemented through the Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law, and Accountability Programme (ARAP), was sponsored by the European Union (E.U).

It was aimed at reducing corruption drastically by the year 2024 through preventive measures, educating the populace, enforcement of existing corruption laws, investigating and prosecuting of perpetrators.

She added that it was important for citizens to become aware of the dangers associated with corruption and its effects on the country's development.

Mr Kwadwo Adu-Asare, an Assistant Civic Education Officer, during one of the sensitization programmes at Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School defined corruption as a dishonest conduct by a person in authority.

Mr Adu-Asare further explained to the students what amounted to corruption, causes, its effects and the tools used by people to perpetrate corrupt acts and how they could help reduce it within their communities.

He said there were many forms of corruption which included kickbacks, nepotism, embezzlements, misappropriations, and bribery.

The Civic Educators also visited the Salvation Army Health workers at Begoro, Ehiamantsine, Osino and others.
