Payment Of Informant Allowance: Police Lauds Government

The Police Administration has commended the government for the re-introduction and payment of informant allowances which would help combat crime in the country.

Investigations by the Ghana News Agency showed that successive governments have since 2002 failed to pay the informant allowances.

But, in an interview with the GNA in Sunyani, Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Crime Officer, said the government has effected payment of the allowances to all crime officers across the region.

He said obtaining information is quite expensive and such allowances would go a long way to motivate Police informants.

Chief Supt Duah said the Police depended mostly on civilian informants to fighting crime, and expressed optimism that with the payment of the allowances the general public would be motivated and volunteer authentic and reliable information to the Police.

He said the confidentiality of Police informants were always guaranteed and appealed to the general public not to be reluctant to feed the Police with information on people with questionable characters for investigations.

'The various crime officers have been given substantial amount to be given to reliable informants' the Regional Crime Officer said and called on the media to also play their watchdog role diligently.

Chief Supt Duah also advised the media particularly the electronic ones to be circumspect in their reports on issues concerning crime in order not to create unnecessary fear and panic in society.
