East Gonja Municipal Assembly Gets Borehole

Salaga (N/R), Jan. 21, GNA - Desert Research Institute (DRI), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has donated six tricycles and water quality testing kits to the East Gonja Municipal Assembly.

The donation of the items was aimed at facilitating easy movement of borehole mechanics known as circuit riders to over 72 communities within the Municipality to repair and maintain the proper functioning of boreholes to ensure that the communities had access to portable drinking water.

The donation sponsored by DRI in partnership with the University for Development Studies (UDS) and the East Gonja Municipal Assembly is intended to address the water challenges by ensuring that communities' boreholes are kept functioning.

Dr Braimah Apambire, Senior Director of Center for International Water and Sustainability (Ciwas), said the donations forms part of DRI humanitarian service of impacting scientific knowledge and skills through community capacity building to address community challenges.

He said the circuit riders with the aid of the tricycles and testing kits would visit all communities that have borehole on regular inspections to repair broken parts of the boreholes to ensure continues supply of water.

Dr Apambire said the continuous supply of water to community members would have a great impact on the girl child education since they won't spend their learning hours searching for water instead of being in the class rooms.

Mr Mohammed Tamimu, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for East Gonja, who received the equipment in Salaga at the weekend, said the testing kits and tricycles would aid the circuit riders to extend their services to communities that are far to reach.

This, he said, would ensure that all communities in Salaga and its environs would benefit from the donation and have access to quality, improved and safe drinking water to avert water borne diseases in the area.

Mr Salifu Adam Braimah, the Member of Parliament for Salaga South Constituency, lauded DRI for their enormous strides in addressing the water challenges and finding lasting solutions to the mechanization of boreholes in the area.

He appealed to DRI and other benevolent organizations to consider exploring the tourism potentials of the area to turn the fortunes of the district for the needed development.
