LADA Institute (Law and Development Associates) a non-profit organisation that focuses on human rights capacity building, has held a two-day refresher workshop for forty(40) police prosecutors from Tema and Accra respectively.

Speaking to Modern Ghana News, Medinat Giwa, Manager LADA institute, says the two-day refresher workshop is a follow-up to the initial training of 450 police prosecutors across the country from January 2016 to April 2017.

The training was to equip the officers to discharge their duties effectively and also update their knowledge of the changing trends in prosecution. Its main objective is to build on the existing knowledge of the police prosecutors and to expand their capacity in presenting criminal cases in court.

The $2 million project which was funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) was to increase the number of quality prosecutions handled by police prosecutors throughout Ghana and to improve the relationship between the Ghana Police Service and key stakeholders in the criminal justice, including the office of the Attorney General and the Judicial Service of Ghana.

The initial training from January 2016 to April 2017 consisted of a four-week lecture programme including court visits, mock training and classroom practical exercises for each cohort.

As part of the follow-up exercise, monitoring, mentoring and evaluation visits were conducted from May 2017 to July 2017.

The refresher workshops commenced in Ashanti region and have so far been conducted in 7 regions. By the end of October 2017, all the regions in Ghana would have been covered.
