31.08.2017 LISTEN

Accra, Aug. 29, GNA - The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area - Water and Sanitation Project (GAMA-SWP) has step up efforts to ensure good sanitation and hygiene in some low income communities within the Osu Klottey Electoral Area.

The programme is to sensitise groups such as food vendors and toilet operators on the need to get a household toilet at half price.

It is also aimed at increasing access to improved sanitation and water with emphasis on low income urban communities across GAMA and is being sponsored by the World Bank.

Mr Graham Sarbah, the GAMA-SWP Coordinator of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during a house-to-house awareness campaign to ensure every household got a toilet facility in their homes at reduced prices.

He said the continuous sensitisation and awareness creation was a positive way to ensure sustainability and the adherence to environmental sanitation laws.

Some communities under GAMA are still battling with poor sanitation problems, hence the need to strengthen the management of environmental sanitation in those areas.

Mr Sarbah urged the people of Osu to take advantage of the provision of household toilet at half price to improve sanitation.

Mr Henry Kotei Kotey, the Assemblyman for Kinkawe Electoral Area, who took the Coordinator round, appealed to the people to be proactive to the current unhealthy practices associated with open defecation.

He said he would continue to ensure a clean environment but encouraged the residents to properly dispose of their waste.
