Bolgatanga, June 1, GNA - The Association of Tricycle Operators in Bolgatanga has expressed concern about a ban imposed on their operations by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in the Municipality.

The statement for the ban took effect May 26 said tricycles are registered for private use, but were being used for commercial purposes by minors without driver's license and who rode them without recourse to traffic regulations.

Mr Salifu Majeed, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, at a press conference, expressed concern about the directive, saying the introduction of tricycles also known as 'Mahama camboo' in the municipality, had eased the transportation burden on residents who could not afford their own means of transport.

He said the business is a source of income for the teaming youth in the region and assured patrons especially market women that the vehicles were safe, less expensive and driven with care.

Mr Majeed said their services were essential in transporting distressed and stranded passengers, 'there were countless times we transported especially pregnant women to the hospital at night for medical attention'.

They said members of the Association are currently undergoing a process of acquiring driver's licenses and pleaded with REGSEC to reconsider its decision.

Mr Abdul Rahaman Karim, Chairman of the Association, expressed displeasure that the Association was not consulted before the ban was imposed adding that they had equal rights as other commercial vehicle operators.

He conceded that some minors were engaged in the business and called on the security services to enforce the law and help prevent the occurrence.
