UHAS VC worried over uncompleted road on campus

The Vice Chancellor for the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof John O. Gyapong has lamented that road projects in the school are not giving the necessary priority as they should be.

According to him, the road linking the school to town is still under construction and nothing seems to be done about the situation making it very difficult for students to commute from school back to their hostel.

Prof Gyapong made the comment when members of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee [PIAC] and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists [IFEJ] paid a visit to the university to inspect some projects funded with oil revenue in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region.

Prof Gyapong lamented that the condition of the access roads within the university which he described as very frustrating to the university community.

Students are conveyed from hostels around Ho to campus every day at their own cost because the university is not able to afford to provide transportation for the three thousand students currently.

The Vice Chancellor said, they have an arrangement with Metro Mass Transit for scheduled hourly trips to the campus and even at that, the bus is always overloaded with students.

“The Metro Mass bus [we] arranged to carry students is always overloaded though they pay for the services,“ he stated.

Prof John O Gyapong further stated the lack of hostel facilities as well as bungalows for the University’s staff numbering over 300. He appealed to government to give urgent attention to the road network, the hostel facilities as well as the staff bungalows.

“Governments, both the old and the current [administrations] did very well for the university but we need urgent attention to some facilities and the road network as well”.

Construction of the Faculty of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, students’ hostel and staff accommodation is awarded to Yan Jim Group of China with contract duration of 30 months at the sum of GHS34, 107,262.9.

The team also toured Mawuli School in Ho and called on the concerned authorities to ensure the completion of some abandoned projects as well as rehabilitation of others in order to address the congestion problems.
