Settle All Feeding Grant Arrears Or Incur Our Wrath
15.05.2017 LISTEN

Friends of the Press, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Konkomba Youth for NDC's attention has been drawn to the Nana/Bawumia government's indebtedness of Senior High School Feeding Grant arrears to the continuing students of the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana for three terms.

While schools in the southern part of the country resumed on Thursday 4th May 2017 with teaching and learning ongoing, their counterparts in the Northern regions are languishing at home with despair due to the ineptitude of the NPP government. This avoidable situation is not just unfortunate but a bad testament of misapplication of public funds and gross incompetence of the Nana/Bawumia government. A situation carefully rehearsed and crafted to keep our young brothers and sisters at home.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a government touting itself with accolades of having the best pair of hands to drive Ghanaians to paradise should not be found in this quagmire of irresponsibility and total neglect for the fate of our young ones in school. With each passing day, the students are deprived of their constitutional rights with impunity whiles the government looks on without a clue of resolution.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our records show that the current government only attempted to defray two of the four terms arrears without recourse to the current 2016/2017 term tranches that will rally the students in school. This attempt is inconsistent with the NPP's 2016 campaign promises on feeding grants phenomenon in the erstwhile H.E John Dramani Mahama's administration and therefore amounts to failure on the part of Nana/Bawumia administration. The former President was highly chastised by our northern brothers and sisters in the NPP but sadly enough, they have reduced the scheme to ridicule with no reverence today.

Ladies and Gentlemen, in as much as recounting errors of the pass may not solve the problem of today, the citizens and for that matter our students must not be sacrificed on the table of political propaganda of the New Patriotic Party government.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, this failure and loss of focus by the NPP government raises eyebrows as to how effective the Nana/Bawumia administration will implement their flagship Free Senior High School program if they simply cannot pay the feeding grants of four out of the ten regions in Ghana. This is an issue of great concern since the said program shall include the feeding of both boarding and day students across the country.

Friends of the Press, the most intriguing and more worrying aspect of it is the failure of the NPP government to define a road map stating clearly and categorically a sustainable source of funding for this flagship free SHS program yet to be implemented.

As youth, we wish to remind the Nana/Bawumia administration that Governance is a serious business and therefore those who aspire to occupy such high seat must do so with all the sincerity, tact and finesse it deserves.

We again call on the NPP government to swiftly settle the remaining arrears to enable our brothers and sisters gain the needed concentration for their studies.

Lastly Ladies and Gentlemen we entreat the NPP government to equally define a more pragmatic and sustainable source of funding for the Free SHS program lest the policy is reduced to a recipe of academic disaster.

Thank you.
