Accra, April 25, GNA - Thirty women entrepreneurs have begun a two-day training programme to sharpen their skills with practical solutions in packaging and labelling to make their products attractive and competitive in the local and international markets.
Drawn from four chapters of the African Women's Entrepreneurship Programme (AWEP) namely: Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Togo, the women operating within various sectors including textile, cosmetic, agro-processing, fruits, vegetables and vegetable oil would pick lessons from key experts on how to improve on their packaging.
AWEP members from Liberia, Nigeria, Gambia and Sierra Leone are joining the workshop via live stream in collaboration with the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) Trade Resource Centers (ATRCs) in those locations.
Mr Bill Noble, the Value Chain Development Specialist, West Africa Trade and Investment Hub, said the principal objective of the workshop was to provide AWEP member companies with practical solutions for their packaging needs to enable their products be more attractive and competitive in local and international markets.
He said the women would receive guidance on good business packaging practices as part of efforts to strengthen their capacities to take advantage of intra-regional and international trade.
Mr Noble said packaging was extremely important for the food product sector in which most of the women were engaged and also to meet the quality and health standards that governments required before the products are sold.
'Everywhere in the world, as far as consumption is concerned, there are strict protocols about food safety and packaging,' he said.
He said the project was ready to provide technical assistance to the women on how to make their packaging better and competitive.
The Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs Gifty Twum Ampofo, encouraged the women to take packaging seriously as it would go a long way to attract people to their products.
The workshop was organised by West Africa Trade and Investment Hub project and supported by the United States Agency for International Development.
