Institutions urged to adhere to fire safety management

Accra, Feb 18, GNA - Dr Albert Brown Gaizie, the Chief Fire Officer, has appealed to government agencies to be proactive and adhere to fire safety management to reduce fire outbreaks in the country.

'If we can get money to rehabilitate these burnt structures, then we should equally think of getting money for early warning systems and fire defensive systems to avoid investing money in rebuilding destroyed structures,' he said.

Dr Gaizie made the appeal on Wednesday when he met management of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

He said the Service had conducted fire safety audit in hospitals and polyclinics as well as government installations and would make the reports available to the Ministry of Health.

Dr Gaizie said many structures at the Hospital needed to be rewired and appealed to fire safety officers at the departments to ensure regular housekeeping practices on fire safety and ensure that there are exit directional signs.

  Dr Gaizie said fire fighting was a collective responsibility and urged all to adhere to recommendations on fire safety audit to reduce fire outbreaks.

Dr Gilbert Buckle, the Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu Hospital, thanked management of GNFS for the visit and that their presence had demonstrated commitment to fight fire outbreaks in the country.

Dr Buckle commended the Fire Service for the swift response to the fire outbreak at the Pharmacy Department.
