Akyawkrom (Ash), May 24, GNA - Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, on Saturday cautioned supervisors and facilitators of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education against allowing themselves to be manipulated or be used by any political party for their gains.

He, therefore, urged them to help vulnerable adults to acquire knowledge and skills to enable them to improve upon their standards of living.

Mr Boafo was speaking at the closing ceremony of a 15-day motor-riding training workshop for 144 supervisors and programme officers of the NFED drawn from all the districts of Ashanti at Akyawkrom near Ejisu.

The Regional Minister said the government would do everything possible to eliminate illiteracy, which according to him cause ignorance and poverty.

He said, consequently, government was improving education including the NFED, under the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy. Mr Boafo said the provision of motorbikes and the establishment of training workshop in Ashanti was a clear manifestation of the importance government attach to the functional literacy programme. He said to ensure regular maintenance of the motorbikes, plans were far advanced to set up a plant and maintenance unit at the regional office.

Mr Boafo advised supervisors and programme officers to work honestly and assiduously to achieve good results and expressed regret that in the past some supervisors of the NFED collected funds for their operations but did not visit their learning centres or classes. Mr Francis Assuming, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the NFED, expressed appreciation at the provision of the motorbikes and said it would enhance the supervision and monitoring of classes. 24 May 04
