RE: NKRUMAH WAS NOT AN OPPORTUNIST

Sonetco Institute fully associate itself with the write-up below. To call Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah an opportunist because he lead Ghana to independence is just like saying Neil Amstrong was an opportunist for being the first man to be in space. It is like calling Nelson Mandela as an opportunist because there were great men like Robert Sobukwe, Steve Biko, Desmond Tutu, Thabo Mbeki etc. Why are anti-Nkrumahist rather are afraid to tell Ghanaians what got him to leave the UGCC. As we speak no single Ghanaian nor African is in the league of the world Nkrumah is honored with.

NKRUMAH WAS NOT AN OPPORTUNIST
I listened to Mr Ayikoi Otu on saying emphathically the Nkrumah was an opportunist, infact I didn't believe it was the same man who weeks ago excelled inside the supreme court premises coming out with that ascertion.Nkrumah wasn't an opportunist and history doesn't even support that ascertion. When Nkrumah arrived,he infact did his best for the UGCC despite the challenges. He made some recommendations and apart from one Mr S.E Ackah, every member of the UGCC executives disowned the recommendations in connections with the organization of the UGCC they claimed he was just and employee of the organization so would be responsible for his actions.A commission came out with a report and part of the report said, the UGCC did not really get down to business until the arrival of Nkrumah on 16th December 1947 and his assumption of the post as secretary.

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako treated the topic well on newsfile but my issue was the founder's issue,i followed the trend Senior comrade used and want to continue from there. The reason why I would have no problem with the founder's decision is that, real political competition took place in 51,54,56 during the elections, though the cpp commanded mass support there was real politicking and one of the later days strong demand of the opposition then was federal system of government, they had conscientized the farmer in Ashanti region and other places to believe that, they would survive or gain something meaningful from their cocoa if they supported a kind of secession move. The issue of Trans Togoland and other boundary issues wasn't part of their agenda and if Nkrumah had not used his strategic education system with massive boarding house system and spreading of development acrose the country including concentrating on developing the human resource at the north,we wouldn't have gotten here to be fighting over who is the founder.

They main agenda of the opposition after realizing could not beat the cpp in General elections, was advocating for a federal system of government concentrating only on the Akan speaking areas af Ashanti Region and part of now Brong Ahafo, they created serious tension in the country polluting the minds of some elements of the cpp in the north. The question is if Nkrumah had not stood his grounds, would we have had a unitary state called Ghana?

He did not just went out of the UGCC,many unpalatable things happened especially when some of them suspected his communist inclinations and the growing popularity amongst the rank and file. They even refused paying his personal secretary.Their kind of struggle was centered on elitism so the CYO guys realizing the resilience of Nkrumah decided to have him lead them wean themselves from that elitism posture. At a point J.B Danquah himself confessed at a rally that,if they the UGCC executives had failed them,Nkrumah wouldn't fail them
