Cape Coast, Oct. 23, GNA - A group of armed robbers dressed in military attire, on Tuesday night attacked and robbed traders who were travelling from Kumasi to Cape Coast, near Ashanti Bekwai. Narrating their ordeal to officials of the GPRTU Number Two Station Office at Cape Coast in the presence of the GNA, two of the victims, Madam Adwowa Aframa and Fati Mohammed said they set off from Kumasi around 9 PM.

They said when their vehicle was nearing Ashanti Bekwai, they realised that a portion of the road had been blocked with a huge tree and as soon as the driver stopped armed men dressed in military attire emerged from the bush firing warning shots. All the passengers were forced to alight and made to lie on the ground at gunpoint.

They were searched and all money on them running into several millions of cedis taken away.

According to them, another Cape Coast bound vehicle travelling on the route, came upon the scene and drove back, probably to alert the Police, but the robbers who also assaulted the driver and some of the passengers, fled by the time Police arrived.

They said the driver of the vehicle whose name they gave as Joe, was seriously injured and had been admitted at the Bekwai Government Hospital.

The Station Master, Mr Kwame Yamoah, who consoled the victims appealed to the Police to intensify their patrol of the highways to stem such negative activities.
