Political parties have been advised to refrain from conveying their supporters to rally grounds in buckets of pickups because such passengers would not benefit from any form of compensation in the event of accidents.
The Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr Sebastian Acheampong, gave the advice during a meeting with representatives of political parties at Ho last Thursday.
Present were representatives of the National Democratic Congress, New Patriotic Party, Progressive People’s Party and Convention People’s Party.
He advised that large numbers of party supporters must be conveyed in buses, stressing that riding in open pickups and trucks was unsafe and should be avoided.
He further admonished party supporters being conveyed in buses to desist from singing or making noises that might disturb drivers or distract their attention.
Mr Acheampong also said buses should not be overloaded and their drivers should avoid speeding or attempting to show that they were better drivers.
He added that political party organisers of such fora should ensure that they appoint responsible people to help in the implementation of the road safety code for political parties.
He said the upcoming political campaign season coincided with the Christmas season, hence the need for utmost co-operation to reduce and prevent accidents.
The Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fred Lumor, expressed the hope that all stakeholders would put their acts together to enable the Road Safety Commission chart a more tangible course to achieve its aims.
He also commended the commission for organising the platform for political parties and gave the assurance that the police would rally behind it to enable it attain its goals.
For their part, representatives of political parties called for the participation of more stakeholders in order to tackle the problem of road safety holistically.
